UK Research and Innovation

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) formed in April 2018 as the primary public funding organization for research and innovation in the UK. UKRI brings together the 7 thematic UK research councils, Innovate UK and a new organization and working closely together with its partner organisations across the UK.

 

UKRI International has purpose to provide a coherent and efficient international capability for UKRI that adds value to its constituent Councils and leadership in its international activities. UKRI has UK Aid Strategy which aims to strengthening global peace, security and governance, strengthening resilience and response to crises, promoting global prosperity and tackling extreme poverty and helping the world’s most vulnerable.

 

Funds developed to support cutting edge research that addresses the challenges faced by developing countries and strengthen capacity of research, innovation and knowledge exchange in developing countries and in the UK through partnerships. There are 2 type of fund :

  1. Newton Fund

Newton Fund provides around £735M UK investment from 2014-2021 with 18 partner countries providing matched resources within fund.

  1. GCRF

£1.5billion of ODA funding between 2016-2021. Over 800 current

projects, with 80+ LMIC project partners. Focus on:

- Challenge led / research driven

- Interdisciplinary research with impact

- Strengthening capacity
