Jakarta, 24 July 2025 – Indonesia is strengthening its position as a global hub for battery and electric vehicle (EV) industry development. In anticipation of the International Battery Summit (IBS) 2025, a series of strategic activities have been launched to foster collaboration between industry players, government institutions, academics, and global partners toward building a sustainable and integrated energy ecosystem.
As part of the “Indonesia Maju” vision and the implementation of the Asta Cita agenda—particularly point five, which focuses on strengthening downstream industrialization to enhance the value of natural resources—the government is driving downstreaming as a central strategy in the country’s economic transformation. Downstreaming in critical mineral sectors, including nickel and batteries, creates domestic added value, strengthens energy independence, and enhances Indonesia’s global competitiveness. Indonesia's commitment is exemplified through the development of an integrated electric vehicle battery industry ecosystem, particularly the ANTAM–IBC–CBL consortium located in the Artha Industrial Hills (AIH) area of Karawang, West Java. This initiative serves as a symbol of Indonesia’s serious efforts toward sustainable downstreaming and is now seen as a benchmark for other developing nations.
As a continuation of these efforts, IBS 2025 will be held on August 5–6, 2025, at Hotel Mulia, Jakarta. The summit is organized by the National Battery Research Institute (NBRI) as the host, with Id Battery as co-host and Pamerindo as co-organizer. The event is supported by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) as Ministry Co-Host, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming (BKPM) as Ministry Support.
Industrial downstreaming—especially in battery-related sectors—is a cornerstone of Indonesia’s national strategy to enhance energy sovereignty. By processing raw materials domestically and fostering innovation, the country aims to create high-value industries, reduce dependence on imports, and improve global competitiveness.
The summit will serve as a global strategic forum that brings together stakeholders across the entire battery and EV value chain. It will also function as a platform for energy diplomacy, including through the “Energy Diplomacy: South-South Nations Cooperation” panel, which will feature representatives from embassies and international industry players. In this context, guidance and presence from the President of the Republic of Indonesia or senior government representatives are highly anticipated to reaffirm Indonesia’s leadership position in the region and as a center of global collaboration.
“IBS 2025 is not just a summit; it is a cross-border collaborative movement to shape the world’s energy future. Indonesia has the resources, human potential, and political commitment. It’s time to lead—not just participate,” said Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Evvy Kartini, Chair of the International Battery Summit 2025 and Founder of NBRI.
Reynaldi Istanto, Co-Chair of IBS 2025 and Chairman of Id Battery, added “this year, our vision is to make IBS a more inclusive platform—not only for technical discussions, but also for strategic dialogue that encourages investment, education, and integration between local industry players and global partners. We believe Indonesia has a real opportunity to become a global hub for the battery industry.”
Full support for IBS 2025 has been extended by the government and industrial stakeholders, who view this event as a true reflection of Indonesia's downstreaming progress and its readiness to become a key global player. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), serving as Ministry Co-Host, emphasized the importance of downstreaming as part of the national economic transformation agenda.
Dimas Muhamad, Deputy Coordinator of the Downstreaming Task Force and National Energy Security and an advisor to the Minister of Energy and Mineral resources, emphasized, “Fostering nickel and battery material downstream industry is a critical step toward energy security and green economic transformation. IBS 2025 supports Indonesia’s priority to bolster resource-based industrialization and we extend our support to this initiative as a part of our shared endeavor to reinvigorate the competitiveness of our national industry.”
Muhammad Firmansyah, Program Director of NBRI and Executive Director of Id Battery, stated, "Indonesia needs an integrated, long-term roadmap to build a strong and competitive battery industry. This isn't just about electric vehicles, but also the use of energy storage technology for the community—for example, the use of solar panels and batteries in the household and industrial sectors. IBS 2025 is a crucial meeting point for unifying this vision."
IBS 2025 is part of the series leading up to The Battery Show Indonesia 2025, and Pamerindo Indonesia is ready to make it a success as a co-organizer. "Pamerindo fully supports IBS 2025 as part of our commitment to strengthening industrial connectivity. We see IBS as a strategic platform to bring together global industry players and encourage the growth of the new and renewable energy sector in Indonesia," said Lia Indriasari, Country Manager of Pamerindo Indonesia.
Support also comes from international private sector stakeholders. Huayou Indonesia, serving as Platinum Sponsor of IBS 2025, shared its reasons for backing the summit.
Marvel Hu, Deputy General Manager of Huayou Indonesia Regional Management Center said, “we see Indonesia playing a vital role in the global EV battery supply chain. IBS 2025 offers the right platform to strengthen collaboration between global players and local partners, and we are proud to be part of this important journey.”
In addition to Huayou Indonesia, IBS 2025 also receives strong support from other strategic partners, including PLN and Huawei, who are contributing as sponsors. Their presence further underscores the cross-sectoral commitment to accelerating the development of Indonesia’s battery industry and energy transition.
With the theme “Powering the Future: Advancing the Global Energy Transition with Battery Technology”, IBS 2025 is expected to be a benchmark for the progress of the battery industry in Indonesia and a catalyst for collaboration, innovation, and investment. The event connects stakeholders from around the world to work together to build a clean, independent, and sustainable energy future. (FA)
