Discussing Current Conditions and Solutions in Battery Technology and Recycling in Indonesia

On August 30, 2024, the National Battery Research Institute (NBRI), in collaboration with the Indonesia Smart Grid Initiative (PJCI), hosted a seminar on "Innovation in Energy Storage and Battery Technologies: Recycling for Sustainability" at the Power Generation Renewable Energy & Electrical Equipment Exhibition. This event, which marked the third day of the prestigious 22nd series exhibition, was organized by PAMERINDO INDONESIA and Informa Markets, with the support of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM). The seminar attracted a wide audience, including industry professionals, researchers, and government representatives, eager to explore the future of energy storage.

The seminar featured Prof. Evvy Kartini, founder of NBRI, as one of the keynote speakers. Prof. Evvy emphasized Indonesia's growing role in the global battery industry, particularly with its vast reserves of critical minerals such as nickel, essential for battery production. She highlighted the country’s potential to become a key player in the global supply chain for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage solutions. Her insights underscored the strategic importance of Indonesia's resources in the clean energy transition.

A key focus of the seminar was on the recycling of batteries to ensure sustainability in the energy storage sector. Prof. Evvy discussed the environmental challenges posed by the rapid growth of lithium-ion battery usage and stressed the need for effective recycling practices to mitigate the impact of battery waste. She advocated for increased investment in battery recycling technologies as a way to reduce reliance on new raw materials and support the circular economy.

Another critical topic addressed by Prof. Evvy was the need for standardization in lithium-ion battery safety. As the demand for batteries continues to rise globally, ensuring safety and reliability across the production and usage cycle is essential. Prof. Evvy called for the implementation of universal safety standards for lithium-ion batteries, which would not only improve consumer confidence but also enhance the global competitiveness of Indonesia’s battery industry.

The seminar concluded with a strong message about the importance of collaborative efforts between the government, industry, and research institutions to drive innovation in battery technologies. Prof. Evvy reaffirmed NBRI’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge research and promoting sustainable solutions in the energy storage sector. The event provided valuable insights into the future of battery innovation and solidified NBRI’s position as a leader in the field of renewable energy and battery technology.
