A Strategic Discussion on Advancing Indonesia\'s Lithium-Ion Battery Ecosystem

On August 27, 2024, the National Battery Research Institute (NBRI) and Carsurin had the honor of hosting a delegation of 21 representatives from the Ministry of Industry of Indonesia (Kemenperin), the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), and the National Standardization Agency (BSN). The visit provided an invaluable platform for discussing the current state of Indonesia’s lithium-ion battery ecosystem and the standardization of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The event reflected a strong commitment to fostering collaboration between key stakeholders in advancing the country’s role in the global battery and EV sectors.

The discussions were focused on the challenges and opportunities surrounding EV battery standardization in Indonesia, a critical factor in ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of lithium-ion batteries. The delegation engaged in a rich exchange of ideas, bringing together diverse perspectives from government, industry, and research. This exchange highlighted the shared goal of enhancing Indonesia’s EV ecosystem, with a particular focus on the development of battery standards that align with international best practices.

A highlight of the visit was the tour of NBRI’s Metallurgy Lab and Battery Testing facilities, which allowed the delegation to gain firsthand insights into the institute’s cutting-edge research and development efforts. During the tour, the visitors observed the rigorous standardization testing processes used to evaluate the safety and efficiency of lithium-ion batteries. This visit underscored the importance of robust testing protocols to ensure that Indonesia’s battery products meet the highest global standards.

In addition to the technical aspects of battery standardization, the delegation also explored the broader sustainability goals of the electric vehicle sector in Indonesia. The discussions emphasized the role of lithium-ion batteries in promoting environmental sustainability and reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels. NBRI and Carsurin demonstrated their ongoing efforts to contribute to the EV conversion movement, which aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles across the country.

This visit marked an important step forward in the ongoing collaboration between NBRI, Carsurin, and key government agencies. By fostering dialogue and partnerships, the event highlighted the shared commitment to positioning Indonesia as a leader in the global battery and electric vehicle industries. Through continued innovation and collaboration, NBRI remains dedicated to advancing sustainable energy solutions that benefit both the country and the international community.
