NBRI Successfully Conducts Comprehensive Training on "Advanced Material Processing in Battery Technology: From Nickel to Battery"

Serpong, November 21, 2024 – The National Battery Research Institute (NBRI) successfully held its Battery School themed "Advanced Material Processing in Battery Technology: From Nickel to Battery" on November 19–20, 2024. The event, hosted at NBRI's state-of-the-art training and workshop facilities in the Indonesian Life Science Center, Technology Business Zone of BRIN, Puspiptek Area, South Tangerang, aimed to bolster Indonesia's position as a key player in the global battery supply chain.

As one of the world's largest nickel producers, Indonesia has the potential to become a hub for battery technology innovation. Nickel, a critical raw material, plays a pivotal role in developing high-performance batteries by enhancing their efficiency, lifespan, and safety. The training provided an in-depth exploration of nickel’s journey, from extraction and refinement to its application as a battery component such as cathode materials.

The Battery School featured prominent experts from diverse fields, including:

  1. Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Evvy Kartini – Founder of NBRI and battery technology expert.
  2. Prof. Dr. Ir. Irwandy Arif, M.SI., IPU – Mining expert from a leading mining company in Indonesia.
  3. Bagus Anggraini, S.PD, MT – NBRI Research Assistant.
  4. Tubagus Nugraha, S.T, M.SI – Former Assistant Deputy of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment.
  5. Rifqo Anwarie – Sales and analytics specialist from PT ThermoFisher Scientific.
  6. Nawwal Hikmah, S.SI, M.SC – NBRI Research Assistant.

During the November edition of the Battery School, participants gained deep insights into key aspects of the battery industry, including the nickel market landscape, indices, and Indonesia’s latest industry trends. The program also covered policies and regulations related to critical minerals supporting the global battery supply chain. Furthermore, participants explored value-added nickel processes into cathode materials, material characterization and analysis, and the processing of raw nickel sulfate into battery cathodes.

A key highlight of the training was the practical experience provided through hands-on sessions and demonstrations, such as material characterization using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), battery fabrication and testing, and the conversion of raw materials into high-value battery components. Participants also had the unique opportunity to visit Indonesia’s first EV battery safety testing facility, gaining invaluable firsthand knowledge.

This program emphasized both theoretical understanding and practical application, equipping participants with essential skills and knowledge in advanced material processing.

About NBRI:
