Welcome to the International Battery School 2023. This training becomes one of the important parts for enhancing Indonesian human resources skill to adopt battery technology and support decarbonization on transportation sector, through electric vehicles.
The International Battery School 2023 is organized by National Battery Research Institute in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), United Kingdom and Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Republic of Indonesia.
We would like to thank to the lecturers, instructors, and all parties that have been working very hard for enabling this essential training. Also, for the all participants across 10 industries and institutions (PT. Qualis Indonesia, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, BLK Don Bosco, Banjarmasin State Polytechnic, PT. Oyika Powered Solutions, PT. Carsurin, PT. Industri Baterai Indonesia, Hokuriku Electrical Construction Co. Ltd, Universitas Indonesia, and PT. Pertamina Patra Niaga). Hopefully, this training will give benefit for all stakeholders.
The National Battery Research Institute (NBRI) is Indonesia's leading independent institute for electrochemical energy storage science and technology. NBRI covers research & development, training & education, testing & standardization, international conference, expo, social impact, and publishing. NBRI aims to contribute to the overall issue on battery technology from upstream to downstream, as well as renewable energy. Reflecting to above concern, NBRI completely supports Sustainable Development Goal Agenda, Paris Agreement, and Indonesian government program for implementing clean energy transition through Renewable Energy (RE) and Electric Vehicles (EV).
NBRI is a platform that brings together scientists, academicians, industry partners, the government, and all stakeholders that focus on battery technology and renewable energy. Our priority is to encourage and support the battery manufacturing industry using local resources and provide competent resources in the field of Battery technology for EV and RE. It will enable Indonesia to be independent in energy. For attaining our goals, we open to collaborate with stakeholders for accommodating various views and suggestions from our partners to always be the best.
The NBRI concept founded by Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Evvy Kartini
NBRI was legally established on 07th December 2020 as The Center of Excellence Innovation of Battery and Renewable Energy Foundation, with Prof. Dr. Evvy Kartini and Prof. Dr. Alan J. Drew, becoming the Founder and Co-founder of NBRI, respectively. The NBRI was supported by the UK Government’s Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF), and Queen Mary University London (QMUL), United Kingdom.
Since January 2020, NBRI has performed more than 260 activities and delivered 46 projects national and internationally covering 792 institutions, reaching 11.114 participants, across 35 countries. Those activities include Focus Group Discussion, Lectures, Schools, Workshops, Webinars, joint research, and also annual International Conferences. From those activities & projects, NBRI attained satisfaction score 4.5 out 5.
The Education, Training and Certification Department becomes one of the NBRI’s contribution sector on providing & preparing qualified human resources. Because the quality of human resources becomes a notable aspect for bolstering the developed country ecosystem. Indonesia also revives those dream by boosting the infrastructure development in the past decades. However, such promising quantity progress is still not followed by the development of human resources quality as well.
On the other side, the rise of battery electric vehicles (BEV) and renewable energy trends amidst the disruption age will be another challenge for Indonesian human resources. The World Bank (2020) reported that skill development becomes an essential aspect for curbing those quality shortages. Because low skills perpetuate poverty and inequality.
Since Indonesia has a rich of local resources and benefiting on the bonus demographic momentum, Indonesia has to demonstrate important roles on the battery manufactures as well as renewable energy and electric vehicles industries. However, they are still lack of knowledge on the technology for preparing the BEV era. Due tot his reason, NBRI provides serial of education, training, and skill developments in various topics starting from the upstream, midstream, to downstream that enables Indonesia to be ready in adapting the technology.
One of the milestones is Competency Standard National Working Indonesia (SKKNI) on Battery Pack. NBRI actively promotes and conducts advocacy on the importance of standardization on battery as well as its manpower, due to its chemical and electrical risk. In the midst 2022, NBRI was appointed as a working group leader by Ministry of Manpower. Along with other Indonesia’s experts and industries on battery and electric vehicles, SKKNI on Battery Pack has been ratified by the end of 2022.

Besides, NBRI also open an internship opportunity for students and fresh graduate to deep dive on the development of battery technology ecosystem and solve related various problems. By this year, NBRI has given a memorable internship program for 28 interns across 13 institutions.
International Battery School 2023 is an annual event of NBRI for facilitating a unique and beneficial skill development program, specifically on battery technology topics. Exist for the first time in the midst of 2021, International Battery School has been transforming to follow the industry trends and answering the issues on battery ecosystem.
In 2022, we focus on exploring upstream topics, while Indonesia’s nickel stealing the world’s attention. Besides for general participants, we also have successfully conducted exclusive training for nickel miners’ stakeholders (specifically on C-Profession levels). Through Training of Trainers, we provide an insightful training topic on how to level-up their nickel ore in the value chain of battery industry.
Training of Trainers 2022
This year, the first series of International Battery School 2023 issues on downstream sector of battery technology. Because by 2025, the Government has set an ambitious target to attain 1.8 million of Two Wheels Electric Vehicles (2W-EV) in Indonesia, following the updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) to Electric Vehicles (EV) conversion becomes a prominent strategy to enable those lavish objective. Besides, the Govt has issued a 5-million incentive initiative to boost 2W-EV conversion and created economic value. However, lack of qualified human resources remains an obstacle. Hence, responding those momentum, International Battery School 2023 covers the theme on “Battery Technology for Two Wheels Electric Vehicles and its Conversion.”
As a note, on March 2023, we also successfully conducted Training of Trainers: Battery for Renewable Energy 2023 as a project partner, initiated by Swiss Confederation. This training has been attended by selected lecturers from polytechnics across Indonesia.
