The NBRI concept founded by Prof. Dr. rer. nat Evvy Kartini
NBRI was legally established on 07th December 2020 as The Center of Excellence Innovation of Battery and Renewable Energy Foundation, with Prof. Dr. Evvy Kartini and Prof. Dr. Alan J. Drew, becoming the Founder and Co-founder of NBRI, respectively. The NBRI was supported by the UK Government’s Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF), and Queen Mary University London (QMUL), United Kingdom.
Since January 2020, NBRI has performed more than 394 activities and delivered 78 projects national and internationally covering 948 institutions, reaching 15.364 participants, across 38 countries. Those activities include Focus Group Discussion, Lectures, Schools, Workshops, Webinars, joint research, and also annual International Conferences. From those activities & projects, NBRI attained satisfaction score 4.8 out 5.
In 2023, NBRI actualized one of its visions to gather all stakeholders related to battery technology supply chain in one comprehensive forum, namely International Battery Summit 2023. This first ever International Battery Summit in Indonesia has been successfully conducted in Grand Shahid Jakarta, 1-2 August 2023.

This summit has progressively gathered 327 participants from 172 institutions & companies on upstream to downstream of battery industry, across 12 countries (Indonesia, Singapore, United Kingdom, The United States of America, Australia, Thailand, South Korea, China, Japan, Canada, India, and Malaysia), including 48 speakers.
Based on the occupation, 42% attendances come from private sector, followed by government & state-owned enterprise with 36% and 22% are non-government organization, research institute, and university.
The Education, Training and Certification Department becomes one of the NBRI’s contribution sector on providing & preparing qualified human resources. Because the quality of human resources becomes a notable aspect for bolstering the developed country ecosystem. Indonesia also revives those dream by boosting the infrastructure development in the past decades. However, such promising quantity progress is still not followed by the development of human resources quality as well.
On the other side, the rise of battery electric vehicles (BEV) and renewable energy trends amidst the disruption age will be another challenge for Indonesian human resources. The World Bank (2020) reported that skill development becomes an essential aspect for curbing those quality shortages. Because low skills perpetuate poverty and inequality.
Since Indonesia has a rich of local resources and benefiting on the bonus demographic momentum, Indonesia has to demonstrate important roles on the battery manufactures as well as renewable energy and electric vehicles industries. However, they are still lack of knowledge on the technology for preparing the BEV era. Due to this reason, NBRI provides serial of education, training, and skill developments in various topics starting from the upstream, midstream, to downstream that enables Indonesia to be ready in adapting the technology.
One of the milestones is Competency Standard National Working Indonesia (SKKNI) on Battery Pack. NBRI actively promotes and conducts advocacy on the importance of standardization on battery as well as its manpower, due to its chemical and electrical risk. In the midst 2022, NBRI was appointed as a working group leader by Ministry of Manpower. Along with other Indonesia’s experts and industries on battery and electric vehicles, SKKNI on Battery Pack has been ratified by the end of 2022.
