Hydrogen Economy for Better World

Technically, there are four factors that will reduce green house gas emission. (1) Energy diversification, by increasing the share of renewable energy and reducing the share of fossil energy, (2) Utilization of clean coal technology for electricity generation, (3) Substitution of energy use from fuel to natural gas, and (4) Implementation of energy conservation programs in the coming years. In fact, the issue of energy saving and the environment awareness becomes a strongly reason behind the renewable energy vision. One of promising renewable source is hydrogen. It can be used as energy storage and the energy source for vehicles. In addition, according to presidential decree 79/2014, hydrogen can be used as an alternative energy source in Indonesia.

Prof. Dr. Eng. Eniya Listiani Dewi, M. Eng, Deputy for Information, Energy, and Materials Technology of Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), expressed the hydrogen economy cycle in her plenary session of International Conference on Battery for Renewable Energy and Electric Vehicles (ICB-REV) 2021. She really optimistic about Indonesian target on carbon neutrality by 2030 and net-zero emission by 2070, which 40% is contributed by hydrogen. Indonesia need more Green Hydrogen for industrail application, such as: Biodisel B30 Program, Methanol Production, Growth of Chemical Industry. Besides, Indonesia also need to reduce carbon emission from transportation by using EV, FCV, power generation (renewable), and Industry (Green H2, CO capture).
