NRP Activity related leaching of Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP)
One of the PRN activity is to produce Nickel Sulphate (NiSO4) and Cobalt Sulphate (CoSO4) form MHP. This is conducted in the Metallurgy Department of ITB, lead by Prof M Zaki Mubarak. This research is to support the supply chain of battery industry in Indonesia especially the raw materials. Lithium-ion battery need to have a cathode containing Nickle, Mangan and Cobalt (NMC) where nickle is abundant in Indonesia. However, Indonesia still lack the technology to process the nickle product from Smelter, they are MHP and Nickel Matte, into precursor. This is very important to have the whole supply chain in Indonesia so we can have a fully local content resource for battery. WE have obtain the MHP from PT Smelter Nikel Indonesia in Balaraja, Banten.
This process is essential since Cobalt resource in Indonesia can only be obtain from the byrpoduct of nickel which are MHP and Nickel Matte. There are still cobalt content in those minerals that can be extracted and be used as raw material for lithium-ion battery.
